On faith and works:
We do not earn salvation by works. We are saved by grace through faith—and that living faith, if genuine, necessarily bears fruit in works of love and devotion.
Indulgences flow from a faith already alive in charity: the guilt of sin is already forgiven through the Sacrament of Reconciliation; what remains is the temporal consequence, which the Church, drawing on the treasury of Christ's merits, remits through indulgenced works performed in a state of grace.
